Frequently Asked Questions
(1) Does chiropractic treatment require a referral from a Medical Doctor?
No. Chiropractors are legislated as primary contact health care professionals in the province of Canada. Patient’s can initiate a consult with a chiropractor directly.
(2) Can chiropractic treatment provide a preventative function?
Yes! Clinical experience suggests that people suffering from chronic conditions such as degenerative disc disease (osteo-arthritis), recurring neck and back pain and headaches will experience significantly less symptoms to none at all when undergoing care. The same can apply to stress induced conditions, physical and postural strain.
(3) Why is there a popping sound when a joint is adjusted?
An adjustment causes a change of pressure in the joint, resulting in a gas bubble to release – making a popping sound. It is similar to when you or someone you know ‘cracks’ their knuckles. It doesn’t hurt at all.
(4) Why would a neck adjustment have an effect on anything other than neck pain?
Pain and discomfort in one area of the body can often be associated with a problem with another area.
We have a lot of patients that come in with an acute injury in their neck or low back and recognize that their body is compensating for this. We see this in other pain in their spine and posture changes.
Consequently, addressing one area of dysfunction like the neck can help improve another area such as the low back.
(5) Is a neck adjustment a forceful action?
There are several different varieties of chiropractic techniques, some more aggressive than others, but studies have found that there is very little physical strain applied during a cervical adjustment. It actually requires less movement than it would to back your car out of the driveway or to check a blind spot while driving.
With our Gonstead approach, it is skill, precision and speed that is needed to conduct a safe and effective adjustment.
